Search Tips Print Page


1.  Remember the "Research Starter"

For many popular topics a Research Starter will appear at the top of your search results
Research Starter provides an overview on the topic, including images, keywords, bibliographies, and major issues


2.  Tricks for Searching:  "Quotation Marks," OR, Asterisk*

SuperSearch looks for results including all of the terms you enter in the search box.  To combine your search terms in different ways, use Advanced Search:

  • Use quotation marks to search for a phrase:  "immigration reform"
  • Use OR to search for variations on a word:  immigration OR migration OR diaspora
  • To find varient endings for a word, use the asterisk:  immigra* will find immigrant, immigrants, immigration


3.  Limit your search by Discipline

Go to Advanced Search to limit your search to books and articles within a Discipline



4.  Limit your search by Source Type

After your have done a search, you can limit your results by Source Type








5.  Find Journal Titles

To search for specific journal titles, use the A-to-Z Publications Locator


Select Title Begins With and click the Journals Only button

If your journal title is available, it will appear with the years available.  Embargo: 1 year means the journals is available through SuperSearch one year after publication (e.g. Spring 2014 will be available Spring 2015)



6.  Order Articles from other Libraries

SuperSearch automatically looks for fulltext articles available at Cabrillo College

To search for articles available in other libraries, unclick the fulltext box  

You can request a copy of the article for free using interlibrary loan.  Request an interlibrary loan form at the reference desk
