Library of Congress Classification System

Library of Congress is a classification system used to:

  • Locate books on the same subject in the same part of the library
Some LC classifications for Western History include:
LC classification includes further subclassifications -- for topics, authors, dates, etc.  Notice that the subclassifications include a time frame. Choose books before 1648:

DA129-260  Early and medieval to 1485
DA140-199  Celts. Romans. Saxons. Danes. Normans
DA200-260  1154-1485. Angevins. Plantagenets. Lancaster-York
DA300-592  Modern, 1485

DA350-360  Elizabeth I, 1558-1603. Elizabethan age
DA385-398  Early Stuars, 1603-1642

LC Classification system was devised to provide order to the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. The library of 1.5 million volumes was moving to new quarters in 1897. Melvil Dewey (of the Dewey Decimal System) refused to allow any alterations to his system. Consequently, a new system was created and letters were used as the first defining element. Classification was based on "literary warrant" -- if Library of Congress had books on a topic, a place in the classification was created. --Topsy Smalley
