Research in the Social Sciences (Flex 2015)

WHAT RESEARCH PRACTICES DO WE WANT STUDENTS TO LEARN?

Anything at all

What is Research?

Research skills cross-over – can be applied in other disciplines

Get a feeling for the vast amount of information that is out there, how much research is out there

Figure out how you can do something useful:  focusing in on what is useful in that vast amount of information

Evaluating quality, what is a good source, what is good for an academic environment, what is college level

Help students feel that they are contributing something to the vast amount of information, something useful.  Participating in the scholarly conversation

Practice reading and writing a response; responding critically

Placing sources in context

Connecting personal, local topics to a broader context

--Notes 8/24/15
